Welcome

Chris Hand has been a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon since July 2003. He has an NHS practice at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth and a Private Practice at Spire Portsmouth Hospital, Havant. He is Fellowship trained (at the Toronto Western Hospital, University of Toronto, Canada) in Sports Orthopaedics (with particular emphasis in the “key-hole” or arthroscopic surgical technique). The management of acute and chronic shoulder conditions is the predominant part of his elective practice, with the majority of his surgery performed by the “key-hole” technique.

Chris is also regularly involved in the management of acute trauma. This interest has been extended to the management of complex extremity (limb) trauma and its consequences (fractures around joints, bones that heal in a deformed position, bone infection, slow and non healing bone). To this end he has also trained in the “Ilizarov” method (at the United Bristol Hospitals Trust and also the Ilizarov Institute, Siberia). He performs a weekly limb reconstruction operating list in his NHS practice and regularly utilises the Ilizarov technique and apparatus.

As well as his clinical practice Chris is involved in medical education and regularly teaches on Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery Courses. He also holds the status of Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Swansea where he is involved with the MSc Trauma Surgery.
